The way it ruminates on ideas of redemption, revenge, forgiveness, justice, especially framed against the much larger concern of the zombie apocalypse- it’s all just pretty cool. The budget is low, some of the acting from side characters is mediocre, and there’s one scene in particular involving misogyny and a female zombie that I didn’t really care for, but I really feel like this one is a diamond in the rough. It also has one of my favorite endings to a horror movie that I’ve seen in years. It’s light on exposition, allowing the details and nature of the characters and their relationships to reveal themselves naturally over the course of the film.
Sounds a little generic, but it’s actually an intense little character study of the drug kingpin and the female cop who was the murdered officer’s lover. Shit hits the fan pretty quickly, only for it all to be interrupted by- you guessed it- the zombie apocalypse. The basic plot is this: after one of their own is killed by drug dealers, a small group of rogue Parisian cops decide to bring down some vigilante justice and revenge on the criminals responsible in the heavily guarded apartment block where they’re hiding out. I saw it years ago on Netflix and got the random urge to watch it again last night, and it really is an impressive little movie. I’ve never really seen this one discussed anywhere before.
